Universal Studios UK, also referred to as Universal Studios Great Britain, has officially been greenlit by the UK Government in collaboration with Universal Destinations & Experiences. This monumental project marks the company’s first major theme park in Europe and is set to become one of the largest entertainment destinations on the continent.
The new theme park will be built on a 476-acre site in Bedford, Bedfordshire, previously home to a historic brickworks. The park is scheduled to open in 2031, following extensive planning, consultation, and construction phases beginning in 2026.
Universal Studios UK is expected to deliver a £50 billion boost to the UK economy, making it one of the most significant leisure investments in British history. The project will also create an estimated 28,000 jobs:
- 20,000 construction roles during the build phase
- 8,000 positions in hospitality, operations and creative once the park is open
This surge in employment and infrastructure is set to transform Bedford into a key tourism and business hub.
Beyond the theme park itself, the development will include a 500-room on-site hotel, along with a retail and entertainment district.
British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer voiced strong support for the project, highlighting its transformative potential: "This investment places Bedford at the heart of European entertainment, creating jobs, driving tourism, and putting the UK on the global map for world-class attractions."
